With their knives the warriors cut flesh from the captive’s legs, and from his arms, and they put the strips to the fire and roasted them, and ate them. The black-gown did not chant nor did he cry out, except once, when the blade bit deep near his shoulder, and then he groaned and let his head fall to one side.”
