In our other lives, we are good friends we eat our share of cheese his daughter carves soap into the shapes of happiness we don’t touch/talk/cross much but we continue, we persevere in subterranean rivers safe from light, time, and spoil we continue in dark rooms lit by chance we continue our double lives in our possible bright futures after time, we grow bored and walk outside to see what’s the crack and everything is new fictions, new facades new ways to squander our best selves I saw a snake once on Essex Street and recognized something about us years later, I saw a deer on Connecticut Ave in D.C. and followed it until the path became too familiar
